Atlantic Umami

Hotel Architecture & Interiors: Portugal

Atlantic Umami is set within the UNESCO-protected landscape of Parque Natural da Arrábida, conceived as a geological extension of the coastline itself. The architecture traces the shifting movement of the limestone cliffs, stepping and folding in rhythm with the terrain rather than imposing upon it. Volumes emerge from the hillside as if carved by wind and water, constructed from natural stone excavated directly from the site — grounding the project materially and symbolically in its own topography. Green terraces, planted façades, and layered pergolas soften the mass, allowing the building to dissolve into vegetation and horizon.

Spaces unfold like strata: intimate guest rooms recessed into stone, shaded loggias framing the Atlantic, and communal terraces cascading toward infinity-edge pools that mirror sea and sky. The choreography of solid and void echoes the coastal escarpments, creating moments of compression and release — shadowed passages opening to expansive ocean views. Rooted in place and shaped by landscape, Atlantic Umami becomes less an object and more a continuation of Arrábida’s enduring geology.
